Just a reminder to stop by the Blu CitySpaces tonight to celebrate the 1st Birthday of Undercurrentstl.com. No cake and ice cream, but plenty of free beer and apps, entertainment and a chance to win some very cool prizes!

I know there is a lot going on around town tonight, so if you can’t make it before 9pm, just head straight to rBar for the afterparty and a nightcap!

Hope to see you tonight!

…..two of my very favorite things.

Ok, not really. And an unlikely pair, to say the least. However, one positive side-effect of the looming I-64/40 construction is that by filling out a short survey on the subject, you can win a $500 gift card to the St. Louis Galleria.

Click here to share your thoughts and enter to win.

I happen to be lucky enough that I don’t ever really have to get onto the highway if I don’t feel like it. So while I am still going to fill out the survey, I hope the shopping spree goes to someone who will have to deal with the hardhat mayhem every day. At least that way he or she can veer off for some retail therapy if the going gets too tough…

Is it 2009 yet?

We all know by now that talking on a cell phone increases your likelihood of an accident (or – in my case – simply hitting every pothole on the road).

Other studies have shown that talking to someone in the car is nearly as bad, the difference being you have the use of your both hands (assuming you actually use them for driving).

But as this link explains, kids squabbling in the back seat are a real danger.

I woke up this morning knowing that I was going to write a post on biking. Behold – I was beaten – fortunately, not on the side of the road with my bike gently lying on my broken legs.  I love biking in St. Louis.  Seeing the city in slow motion lends an appreciation that is often missed when driving. Every summer I start cycling to work in a desperate attempt to shed a few pounds and avoid parking tickets.  So this month my biking trek began.
The only thing that interrupts this calming experience and invigorating workout is the strange motorists that get a kick at yelling at cyclists and sharing tips on how to ride. Normally, their attention is directed at my male companions – however, this year, I’m riding solo and so I bear the brunt.

If you are as critical of the diamond industry as I am and read this the title will make more sense.

Just a reminder… this Saturday in Clayton and Sunday in West County BMW will donate a dollar for each mile you drive one of their cars. See this post.

Between the two, I’d suggest Saturday if you want good food, live music, a fun time while you’re waiting for your next drive, and a scenic driving route (lots of tree lined streets), Sunday if you’re a speed and cornering freak (lots of highway and exit ramps).

You will NOT regret attending – no sales pressure, just drive and feel good about raising money for a good cause!

Today’s cars are safer than ever, but they don’t yet prevent a drunk driver from getting behind the wheel and starting the motor. Last the number of people who died in drunk driving incidents was greater than its been since 1992. I’m all for a good time, but why is it we feel worse about missing the party than leaving it drunk?

(As I type this I feel hypocritical myself – I mean on the one hand I started my career as a consumer advocate after my friend died as a passenger to a drunk driver and yet just this past weekend I tried to get a friend not to drive drunk then got in with them as some sort of hubristic protective measure).

Can all hold each other to a higher standard? Please?

Reuters reports that Nissan has warned owners the its intelligent key can be rendered useless if placed in the same pocket as a cell phone. (For those of you who don’t know, this is Nissan’s version of the new generation of car keys that allow you to get into and start the car so long as the key is on your person). When your hotel room key forgets who you are, help is an elevator ride away – this might mean you’re forced to spend the night in a hotel.

Each year for as long as I can remember BMW sends a fleet of BMW cars across the country with two goals: 1) to raise money for cancer research and 2) to have people who might never otherwise drive a BMW get behind the wheel and see what all of the hubbub is about.

The official St. Louis dates for the Ultimate Drive for a Cure 2007 are:

05/29/07 Plaza Motor Company
06/02/07 Autohaus of Clayton
06/03/07 Suntrup West Count BMW

You can reserve your spot now by calling toll-free 1-877-4-A-DRIVE or register online at:

http://www.bmwusa.com/bmwexperience/eventsandprograms/udsk/default.

Bring your radar detector – there’s no one with you and no salesman around to try to sell you anything. You’re encouraged to drive as many cars as possible and all cars but BMW M cars are usually present.
