Kicking It Off - This Wednesday http://undercurrentstl.com/blog/2008/09/28/kicking-it-off-this-wednesday/ http://undercurrentstl.com/blog/2008/09/28/kicking-it-off-this-wednesday/#comments Mon, 29 Sep 2008 03:19:55 +0000 Scott Thoughts, Musings & General BS Civic Engagement Events http://undercurrentstl.com/blog/2008/09/28/kicking-it-off-this-wednesday/ Sorry. Two posts in a row about the same subject, but it is important! This Wednesday starts Connect With… 2008 with our 3rd annul Kick-Off event at Skybox. The purpose of Connect With… is to expose young professionals in the region to all the great organizations that are making a difference in our community. These organizations range from civic to social, arts to sciences, and everywhere in between. They are creating a vibrant scene with art, music, theater, debate, great parties, new friends (that you probably didn’t go to high school with), and volunteer opportunities.
This Wednesday, over 40 organizations will have tables and representatives will be on hand to answer your questions and talk about how they make an impact. You will also learn about events happening throughout the month, giving you a chance to sample organizations and find the one that fits your passion.

St. Louis is a great place to live, work and play, as people who are active and engaged can attest.  So come out and give it a try and get involved. It is much better than sitting on your ass at the same old bar; listening to that same old cover band thinking “St. Louis sucks.” Come on. I dare ya.

Event Details:

Connect With… Kick-Off Event
Wednesday, October 1, 5:30pm - 8:00pm
Skybox - 800 N. 3rd Street

They Paved Paradise… http://undercurrentstl.com/blog/2008/09/20/they-paved-paradise%e2%80%a6/ http://undercurrentstl.com/blog/2008/09/20/they-paved-paradise%e2%80%a6/#comments Sat, 20 Sep 2008 16:41:29 +0000 Scott Thoughts, Musings & General BS http://undercurrentstl.com/blog/2008/09/20/they-paved-paradise%e2%80%a6/ In today’s Beacon, Matthew Mourning penned (typed, I guess is the most apropos) a fantastic opinion piece entitled “Downtown St. Louis doesn’t need more parking”. As you may recall, two prestigious law firms recently threatened to defect from Downtown to Clayton. One recanted after being enticed with $700,000 in incentives and the promise of a $15 million parking garage on their doorstep. The other, well, I am sure Clayton will bake them a nice welcome pie.  One out of two aint bad, right?

But, back to parking. Matthew Mourning points out a correlation between the number of parking spaces to workers and the health of a city, with a good balance of 200 spaces per 1000 employees. Chicago and New York, both very healthy cities, have under 100 spaces per 1000, where as Detroit, a struggling city has 473 spaces per 1000. St. Louis, a whopping 541! Maybe we are planning ahead for that big growth spurt? Doubtful.

For some reason, St. Louis leaders seem to equate urban renewal with parking garages. So far we have lost the Century Building (800 feet from Thompson Colburn) and the Ambassador Building (torn down in 1995) which is the proposed spot of the new garage. I had the opportunity to tour the Ambassador Theater before demolition and it was amazing, rivaling the Fox Theater IMHO. But it, of course had to go to make way for “progress.” Now what do we get to replace this downtown jewel? A parking garage. Nice trade.

I have a better way to look at the situation. Let’s propose a solution to Thompson Colburn centering around the health benefits of walking! We could carve out space in the “Century” garage and they could walk the 800 feet to their offices! Oh, let’s do the math shall we? The “Century” garage is 800 feet away from Thompson Colburn. So, figure 2 trips per day to the garage… 5 days a week… 52 weeks a year… 12 months in a year… comes out to about 6.5 miles/month. I am sure cardiologist would agree that adding 6.5 miles/month of walking is in their best interest, right? Plus think of the advantage to TC workers walking past such things as a nice high rise with a boutique or a Dunkin Donuts? Well, that may ruin the benefit. Damn.

SciFest Site is Live http://undercurrentstl.com/blog/2008/08/26/scifest-site-is-live/ http://undercurrentstl.com/blog/2008/08/26/scifest-site-is-live/#comments Tue, 26 Aug 2008 16:18:28 +0000 Scott Civic Engagement http://undercurrentstl.com/blog/2008/08/26/scifest-site-is-live/ Scifest is coming up October 9th through 13th at the St. Louis Science Center! For those that don’t know, St. Louis won out against cities like New York and Chicago to host the first International version of the Cheltenham Science Festival. The purpose of SciFest is to show how science is relevant to our daily lives in a fun, entertaining way. I have been part of the planning process and can say that this will be one heck of a good time!

From their website:

From the science of chocolate and the physics of rock & roll, to climate change and the future of cancer research, SciFest 08 is a festival where everyone can engage in science.
